SumPOS vs Revel Systems

Revel was acquired by Shift4 in a deal completed in mid-2024, and the brand is being folded into SkyTab. If you are a Revel merchant being migrated, you are effectively choosing a new platform anyway - which makes this a good moment to compare properly.

The scoreboard

Most people arriving at this comparison are not evaluating Revel from scratch. They are Revel merchants who have been told they are moving to SkyTab and Shift4 processing, and are deciding whether to accept that migration or use the disruption to choose something else.

Context

Who Revel Systems are, fairly stated

  • Revel Systems was an iPad-based point of sale platform serving restaurants and retail, historically priced from around $99 per terminal per month on multi-year terms.
  • Shift4 completed its acquisition of Revel in June 2024, reported at $250 million and bringing roughly 18,000 merchant locations.
  • Shift4 has publicly described taking the best capabilities from Revel into SkyTab, now positioned as Shift4 Dine. Existing merchants are being migrated.
  • Merchants moving under Shift4 are reported to be required to process payments through Shift4, which is a material change if you had your own processing relationship.

Comparison last reviewed in September 2026 using publicly available pricing pages, published reviews and vendor documentation. Competitors change their pricing, packaging and contract terms regularly, and terms are often negotiated per customer. Confirm current details with the vendor before making a decision - we would rather you checked than took our word for it.

When Revel Systems is the better choice

We would rather lose the sale than lose your trust in month three.

You are happy with Shift4 as your processor

If Shift4's rates are competitive for you and consolidating software and payments with one vendor suits your operation, accepting the migration is a perfectly reasonable decision.

You are in the US and want scale behind you

Shift4 is a large, publicly listed payments company with a substantial support and field organisation. That is real reassurance we cannot match yet.

Your setup depends on Shift4 ecosystem integrations

If your gift cards, loyalty or property management systems already run through Shift4, staying inside that ecosystem avoids a second migration.

When SumPOS is the better choice

Where the structural differences work in your favour.

You do not want your processor chosen for you

This is the single biggest change for most Revel merchants. If you had negotiated your own rate, being moved onto a mandated processor has a direct cost.

You are migrating anyway

The effort of moving is the same whichever destination you pick. That makes this the cheapest moment you will ever have to choose properly.

You want off iPad-only hardware

Running the same system on Android tablets, Windows machines and the web usually reduces hardware cost substantially.

You have European sites

If any part of your group trades in the EU, neither Revel nor SkyTab issues the structured e-invoices those mandates require. We do.

You want no contract at all

After a multi-year agreement that ended in an acquisition and a forced migration, month-to-month tends to look appealing.

Switching

Moving from Revel Systems, realistically

Including the parts that are genuinely annoying, because pretending otherwise helps nobody.

  1. 1Export your menu structure, modifier groups, customers, loyalty balances and gift card liabilities from Revel before your migration date - some of these need specific export procedures.
  2. 2Check what your Shift4 migration transfers automatically and what needs manual handling; ask them in writing.
  3. 3Send us the exports and we will map them, including modifiers and combos.
  4. 4Confirm which peripherals carry over. Standard printers, scanners and drawers usually do.
  5. 5Run SumPOS in parallel for a fortnight before making a final decision. You are entitled to test the destination before committing.

SumPOS and Revel Systems - the questions we get

Still unsure about something? Ask us directly - a person answers, usually the same day.

Shift4 completed its acquisition of Revel in June 2024 and has publicly described folding Revel's best capabilities into SkyTab, now positioned as Shift4 Dine. Merchants are being migrated. Whether you call that a discontinuation or a consolidation, the practical effect for a merchant is that the platform you bought is not the platform you will be running. Confirm your own timeline directly with Shift4.
